Im Jahr 480 vor Christus erwarteten 7000 griechische Soldaten an einer Landenge einen gewaltigen Angriff. Ihnen gegenüber stand die persische Streitmacht, eine der mächtigsten Armeen ihrer Zeit. Die Speerspitze der griechischen Truppen bildeten „nur" 300 spartanische Krieger, angeführt von ihrem furchtlosen König Leonidas. Ihr Kampf wird als die Schlacht bei den Thermopylen in die Geschichte eingehen und sein Ausgang, den kein Einziger von ihnen überlebt, den Lauf der Geschichte und der westlichen Zivilisation dauerhaft beeinflussen.
