Einer seiner letzten Fernsehauftritte war 1981 "An Evening with Danny Kaye and the New York Philharmonic". Zubin Mehta überließ ihm den Taktstock, doch Kaye brachte rund 15 Stück in verschiedenen Größen selbst mit. Denn wie immer konnte und wollte er seinen Humor nicht zurückhalten. So charakterisierte er an diesem Abend verschiedenste Dirigentenpersönlichkeiten und -typen auf höchst amüsante Weise: den Senior, der es kaum noch aufs Podium schafft, oder den virtuosen Pultstar, aber auch den Beau, der beim Dirigieren gleichzeitig mit Musikerinnern und Zuhörerinnen flirtet. Zubin Mehta attestierte ihm übrigens einen "sehr effizienten Dirigierstil".
