Jakobli, der einzige Sohn von Anne Bäbi und Hansli Jowäger holt sich die Pocken. Als alle Wundersalben nicht wirkten, sucht die Mutter den Scharlatan Vehhansli auf, dessen Mittel schon mehr als einem das Leben gekostet hat. Jakobli überlebt, aber die Krankheit hat ihn auf einem Auge blind und narbenübersät gemacht. Eine Kartenleserin prophezeit, dass Jakobli "wybe" müsse, um gesund zu werden. Die Mutter fädelt hinter dem Rücken beider Männer eine Hochzeit ein, übersieht aber dabei die Liebe, die ihren Sohn mit dem Waisenmädchen Meyeli verbindet.
