Ein junger Mexikaner hat im Sommer 1987 im texanischen El Paso keine großen Pläne. In den vergangenen Monaten ist der junge Mann gelangweilt, unglücklich und freudlos geworden. Seine einzigen Gefährten sind seine Eltern, da seine älteren Schwestern weggezogen sind und sein Bruder Bernardo im Gefängnis sitzt, worüber in der Familie jedoch niemand viel spricht. Um nicht so viel Zeit zu Hause verbringen zu müssen, geht Aristoteles (Max Pelayo) in ein öffentliches Schwimmbad in der Umgebung, obwohl er nicht schwimmen kann. Dort will er sich die Zeit vertreiben, bevor er in seinen Alltag zurückkehrt. Doch eines Tages kommt ein junger Mann in seinem Alter, Dante Quintana (Reese Gonzales), auf ihn zu und bietet ihm an, ihm das Schwimmen beizubringen. Damit beginnt eine lange Freundschaft, durch die sie die vor ihnen liegenden Widrigkeiten überwinden können.
