Nellie ist allein, an einem fremden Ort, umgeben von Menschen deren Sprache sie nicht spricht. Ihr Mann ist schwer krank, doch als es ihr gelingt einen Arzt zu finden, ist er bereits tot. Bei ihrer Suche ist Nellie auf den Obdachlosen Georges gestoßen. Es stellt sich heraus, dass er einst Arzt war, seinen Lebenssinn aber schon lange verloren hat. Als das ganze Dorf von einer Epidemie befallen wird, ist es an Georges, aktiv zu werden und Hilfe zu leisten. Trotz der leidvollen Umstände ist es die Begegnung mit Georges, die die junge Witwe Nellie zu unerwartetem Glück führt.
