Der verheiratete japanische Ingenieur Kaji hängt an humanistischen Idealen und meldet sich während des Zweiten Weltkrieges freiwillig als Aufseher für ein Bergwerk in der besetzten Mandschurei, um dem Fronteinsatz zu entgehen. Vor Ort muss er im Umgang mit Kriegsgefangenen nicht nur schnell die Grenzen seiner eigenen Menschlichkeit erkennen, sondern gerät aufgrund seiner Haltung auch in Konflikt mit seinen Vorgesetzten. Dadurch wird er dann doch zum Militärdienst eingezogen und landet schließlich in russischer Kriegsgefangenschaft, aus der er zu fliehen versucht...
