This picture is an illustration of the story of Beatrice Cenci, the young woman who planned the murder of her guardian, in Rom, in the year of 1599. We see Francesco Cenci, who is an extremely gruff and cruel man " - with Beatrice, who is his ward. He makes love to her, but she spurns his entreaties, for she has one who is very dear to her heart by the name of Guido. She writes a note to him to come to the tower of the castle, which he does, and gains access to her quarters by means of a rope ladder, which she lowers from the window.
