Der junge Amerikaner Rick leidet an einer gefährlichen und seltenen Hautkrankheit. Sonnenstrahlen sind für ihn tödlich, daher muss er ständig einen Ganzkörperanzug tragen. Gemeinsam mit seinen Eltern reist er nach Jugoslawien, wo er sich von einem Naturmediziner Heilung verspricht. Dort trifft er auf die schöne Frances, die mit einer Theatergruppe durchs Land reist. Rick verliebt sich und beschließt, sein Leben in Dunkelheit aufzugeben. Er will sich Frances ohne Maske zeigen, auch wenn dies seinen Tod bedeutet.
