Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts trifft in England der gutaussehende Dorian Gray auf den Maler Hallward, der gerade ein Bild von sich malt. Gray ist so begeistert, dass auch er ein Portrait von sich erstellen lässt. Dabei wünscht er sich, dass das Bild statt seiner altern soll und die Spuren seiner Ausschweifungen an ihm nicht mehr zu sehen sind. Zu letzteren lässt er sich durch den zynischen Lord Wotton nur zu gerne verleiten, und schon bald ist man in London über seinen lasterhaften Lebenswandel entsetzt, während man sich wundert, dass er nicht zu altern scheint. Als Hallward Dorian Gray eines Tages besucht, macht er beim Blick auf sein Gemälde eine furchtbare Entdeckung...
