Der kleine Marcelino ist ein Waisenjunge, der in einem entlegenen Bergkloster nahe einem kleinen Dorf in Spanien aufwächst. Einst hat seine Mutter ihn vor der Pforte des Klosters dort abgelegt, die Mönche nahmen ihn auf, um ihn zu erziehen. Das Leben mit einem kleinen Kind ist nicht einfach, doch der unschuldige Junge bringt neben einigen Streichen viel Licht in das harte Leben der Mönche. Eines Tages findet Marcelino auf dem Dachboden des Klosters ein großes Holzkreuz mit einer hölzernen Figur des gekreuzigten Jesus daran.
