Nach einer vernichtenden Kritik über ihren Auftritt in der Oper "Faust" begeht Elena Korvin Selbstmord. Ihr Mann und Leiter der Oper schwört Rache an dem Kritiker. Doch bei einem Kampf wird sein Gesicht durch Säure völlig verätzt. Als maskiertes Phantom schleicht er von nun an durch die Gänge der alten Oper. Als das Bühnenstück mit einer neuen Sängerin besetzt wird, die seiner verstorbenen Frau verblüffend ähnlich sieht, setzt er alles daran, sie vor all dem Übel zu bewahren, welches seine geliebte Frau in den Tod getrieben hat. Einer nach dem anderen muss sterben.
