Denias Leben am Fuße des Jayawijaya-Gebirge. Er geht in die Schule in einer Hütte auf dem Hügel ausführen von Pak Guru (oder Lehrer), der kommt aus Java. Pak Guru überzeugt Denias zur Fortsetzung seiner Ausbildung, weil er glaubt, der junge ist clever und könnte sich zu einem Mathematiker. "Maleo" der Soldat fördert auch Denias, gehen über den Berg, wo eine gute Schule liegt. Dann Denias geht auf eine 10-tägige expedition zu finden, die Schule ganz von selbst. Seinen Schlafsack wäscht im Fluss und er geht auch aus Erschöpfung. Dann hat er zu kämpfen, akzeptiert zu werden in der Schule wie die Freeport Firma, die ihn besitzt, ermöglicht nur die Kinder der Häuptlinge, oder den nächsten Stämme aufgenommen zu werden.
