Der Film erzählt von Thomas Reid, einem typischen irischen Bauern, der ein verarmtes, am Rande der Gesellschaft einsames Leben auf seinem Hof führt. Seit Generationen führt seine Familie den Hof. Thomas lebt wie sein Vater und sein Großvater von der Viehzucht. Die alten Gebäude aus dem 17. Jahrhundert zeugen davon, wie der Zahn der Zeit an ihnen genagt hat. Thomas kommt gerade so über die Runden.
