Der zweiteilige Schwarz-weiß-Film (1. "Der Gefangene auf Kastell", 2. "Die Vergeltung") folgt dem Roman von Dumas ziemlich getreu. Frankreich 1814. Der junge Kapitän Edmond Dantès gerät in ein grausames Intrigenspiel und wird auf seiner Verlobung verhaftet. Ohne Verurteilung schmachtet er im Kerker von Chateau d'If, wo ihm Abbé Faria zum Glück Gesellschaft leistet. Vor seinem Tod verrät ihm der Abbé das Versteck eines Schatzes auf der Insel Monte Christo. Dantès kann fliehen und den Schatz finden. Nach 20 Jahren kommt er als wohlhabender Graf von Monte Christo nach Paris und beginnt, sich an seinen Feinden zu rächen.
