Edmond Dantes wird fälschlich beschuldigt, durch diejenigen, die neidisch auf sein Glück, und wird verurteilt, den rest seines Lebens im berüchtigten Insel-Gefängnis Chateau d ' if. Während inhaftiert, er erfüllt die Abbe Faria, einem Mitgefangenen, denen jeder glaubt, zu Sauer sein. Der Abbe sagt Edmond von einem fantastischen Schatz verborgen, der auf einer winzigen Insel, die nur er kennt die Lage. Nach vielen Jahren im Gefängnis, den alten Abbe stirbt, und Edmond flüchtet verkleidet als die Toten Körper.
