Salvador Allende wollte den chilenischen Staat modernisieren und die Armut bekämpfen. Doch die Konservativen des Landes organisierten sofort nach seiner Wahl zum Präsidenten eine Reihe wilder Streiks, und das Weiße Haus drehte Chiles Wirtschaft den Hahn ab. Als sie begriffen, dass sie Allende mit legalen Methoden nicht ausschalten konnten, bereiteten sie den Putsch vor.
