Der 13-jährige Jonathan Osbourne (Jonathan Kahn), der ein sehr enges Verhältnis zu seiner verwitweten Mutter Anne (Sarah Miles) hat, steht vollkommen unter dem Einfluss seines Mitschülers "Chief" (Earl Rhodes), der einen faschistoiden Geheimbund gegründet hat und absoluten Gehorsam von seinen Untergebenen fordert. Als der Seemann Jim (Kris Kristtofferson) in dem kleinen Küstenstädtchen auftaucht, beginnt er ein Verhältnis mit Anne und auch Jonathan ist fasziniert von ihm und sieht in ihm den heroischen, verwegenen Seefahrer. Als Jim beschließt die Seefahrt aufzugeben, um Anne zu heiraten, bricht für Jonathan eine Welt zusammen.
