"Dickey Betts And Great Southern" waren die dritte Attraktion das "Rockpalast-Festivals" vom 4/5. März 1978 und neben "Mothers Finest" die zweite amerikanische Band, die ihr europäisches Debut in dieser Nacht in der Gruga-Halle und vor Millionen von Zuschauern gab. Er war Gründungsmitglied der "Allman Brothers Band" und als zweiter Sologitarrist mitbestimmend bei den melodiösen und runden Solos und Improvisationen, die den Musikstil dieser Gruppe kennzeichneten, Kritiker fanden dafür den Namen "Southern Rock". 1976 gründete Dickey Betts seine eigene Gruppe, Great Southern, mit der er - wie der Name schon sagt seine Musikrichtung weiterführen und fortentwickeln wollte, was ihm auch in überzeugender Weise gelungen ist. "Dickey Betts And Great Southern" sind heute die wichtigsten und ersten Vertreter des Südstaaten-Rock.
