Bei seiner Arbeit für ein Filmatelier in Hollywood entdeckt Indy, dass er Erich von Stroheim nicht gewachsen ist, als er mit dem trickreichen und größenwahnsinnigen Regisseur wegen des völlig außer Kontrolle geratenen Budgets des Films Törichte Frauen aneinandergerät. Doch auch wenn diese erste Begegnung mit der Filmindustrie Indy einen Schlag versetzt hat, ist er nicht bereit, deshalb die Flinte ins Korn zu werfen. So begibt er sich in einem neuen Anlauf mit dem legendären John Ford auf einen Filmdreh. Ford und seine Freunde, darunter der alternde Revolverheld Wyatt Earp, helfen Indy dabei, die Magie des Films und der Filmproduktion zu entdecken, und als ein Schauspieler einem Schlangenbiss zum Opfer fällt, springt Indy ein, um den Film zu retten.
