Die Dokumentation erzählt anhand von Filmmaterial aus dem Archiv, nachgestellten Szenen und Gesprächen mit Historikern die abenteuerliche Geschichte des Handelsschiffs Selandia. Der Film schildert auch die Geschichte dreier Pioniere, deren Schicksal eng mit der "MS Selandia" verknüpft ist: Rudolf Diesel erfand den nach ihm benannten Verbrennungsmotor, der wegen der niedrigen Betriebskosten auch für die Schifffahrt wirtschaftlich interessant war. 1912 wurde die "MS Selandia" als erstes Schiff mit einem solchen Motor ausgestattet. Ivar Knudsen war Ingenieur und ab 1895 technischer Direktor der Werft des dänischen Unternehmens Burmeister & Wain (B&W). Hans Niels Andersen war ein Großindustrieller der dänischen Handelsschifffahrt und Gründer der East Asiatic Company (EAC).
