In der mongolischen Wüstenregion Bayanhongor beginnt der Frühling. Das junge Nomadenpaar Davaa und Zaya lebt dort mit seinen vier Kindern und kümmert sich um seine trächtigen Tiere und deren Nachwuchs. Die Kinder verbringen die Abende damit, sich Geistergeschichten über verschwundene Jurten zu erzählen. Davaa wacht nachts erschrocken auf und hält bei seiner Herde nach Wölfen Ausschau, findet aber nichts. Die einheimischen Hirten sprechen über die verheißungsvolle Sichtung von zwei „roten Sternen". Eines Tages wird das Lager der Familie von einem heftigen Sandsturm heimgesucht, bei dem die Hälfte ihrer Tiere getötet wird. Sie treffen die bittere Entscheidung, in die Stadt zu ziehen, und Davaa ist gezwungen, sein geliebtes Pferd zu verkaufen.
