Der Heilige Gral ist eine Schale, Platte, Stein, oder eine Tasse, die Teil eines wichtigen Thema der Artus-Literatur. Ein Gral, wundersamen, aber nicht explizit "heilig" erscheint zuerst in Perceval le Gallois, eine unvollendete romanze von Chrétien de Troyes:[1] es ist ein Prozessionsweg Tablett zu servieren bei einem fest. Chrétien die Geschichte lockte viele continuators, übersetzer und Dolmetscher in den späteren 12. und frühen 13 Jahrhunderten, darunter Wolfram von Eschenbach, der den Gral einen großen wertvollen Stein, der vom Himmel fiel. Der Gral-Legende wurde verwoben mit den Legenden um den Heiligen Kelch.[2] Die Verbindung mit Joseph von Arimathäa und mit den Gefäßen, verbunden mit dem Letzten Abendmahl und der Kreuzigung Jesu, stammt aus Robert de Boron Joseph d'Arimathie (Ende 12. Jahrhundert), in dem Joseph erhält der Gral von einer Erscheinung Jesu und sendet es mit seinen Anhängern nach Großbritannien.
