George Bernard Shaw war einer derjenigen, der von der Unsterblichkeit der Musik Edward Elgars überzeugt waren, und er hat sich nicht getäuscht: Denn zumindest in England ist Elgars im Jahr 1900 uraufgeführtes Oratorium „The Dream of Gerontius", oftmals auch als „englischer Parsifal" bezeichnet, nach wie vor überaus populär. Edward Elgars Komposition vereint englische Chortradition mit Wagner'schen Einflüssen. Das Oratorium basiert auf John Henry Newmans Gedicht „The Dream of Gerontius", in dem der englische Kardinal im 19. Jahrhundert seinem tiefen katholischen Glauben Ausdruck verlieh. ARTE zeigt das Werk in einem gefeierten Konzert aus der Pariser Philharmonie.
