Bill ist ein Säufer und Zocker, hat das Herz aber auf dem rechten Fleck. Das erkennt auch die Fabrikarbeiterin Doreen. Sie verlieben sich, obwohl Bills Saufereien und Zechereien ihn immer wieder in Schwierigkeiten bringen. Nachdem er schließlich im Gefängnis landet, beschließt er seinen Lebensstil zu ändern. Als er aus der Haft entlassen wird, gründet er mit Doreen eine Familie und zieht aufs Land, wo ihm sein Onkel einen Job auf seiner Obstplantage verschafft. Von der Veranda ihres neuen Zuhause aus schauen Bill und Doreen ihrer Zukunft freudig entgegen.
