In der festen Überzeugung, dass sein Vater – der zwei Jahre zuvor auf See verschollen war – noch am Leben ist, macht sich der zwölfjährige Felix auf die Suche nach ihm. Begleitet wird er dabei von Old Tom, einem Fischer im Ruhestand, Squawk, einem einbeinigen Papagei, und Rover, einer Katze, die sich wie ein Hund verhält. Ihre Reise führt sie zur Darkshadow Island, in eine unterirdische Stadt, in der sich ein Geheimbund verbirgt – angeführt von der größenwahnsinnigen Morgäa, die im Besitz eines unschätzbaren Schatzes ist.
