Sommer 1977: Der US-Medienunternehmer Steve Ross beschließt, die in den USA exotische Sportart Fußball in seinem Land zu etablieren. Mit spektakulären Spielereinkäufen und intelligentem Marketing schafft er es binnen weniger Jahre, New York Cosmos zur angesagten Sport-Adresse der USA aufzubauen. Vor allem der sportliche Erfolg nach der Verpflichtung der Superstars Pelé und Beckenbauer zieht so viele Prominente aus Sport und Entertainment an, dass das Giants-Stadion, in dem Cosmos die Heimspiele austrägt, schon bald dem legendären 'Studio 54' Konkurrenz machen kann. Nicht umsonst bezeichnet Franz Beckenbauer seine Jahre bei den New York Cosmos noch heute als "die schönste Zeit seines Lebens".
