In Japan setzt ein Meteoritenschauer aus dem All automobilgroße außerirdische Insekten frei, die sich schnell in den Kanalisationen und U-Bahn-Röhren der Städte breit machen und einen gigantischen Pilz kultivieren. Dieser Pilz produziert Sauerstoff in einem für den Menschen lebensbedrohlichen Umfang und dient, wie eine aufgeweckte junge Wissenschaftlerin bald herausfindet, als Basisrampe für die Invasion weiterer Planeten. Das Militär scheint zunächst machtlos, doch dann naht Hilfe von unerwarteter Seite: Die fliegende Riesenschildkröte Gamera greift ein.
