Dem vierjährigen Harold stehen große Veränderungen bevor - die Geburt eines kleines Bruders kündigt sich an und das behagt ihm ganz und gar nicht. Der begabte Harold zieht sich mit seinem magischen, lila Buntstift in eine Fantasiewelt zurück. So kann er alles malen, was er sich wünscht und die Kreide erweckt es zum Leben. Als er sich in seiner Fantasiewelt vorstellt, dass sein kleiner Bruder von Monstern entführt wird und es im realen Leben tatsächlich zum Komplikationen in der Schwangerschaft kommt, muss Harold erkennen wie egoistisch er den Buntstift genutzt hat. Von nun an möchte er mit seiner magischen Kreide seiner Familie und seinen Freunden in Nöten helfen. Adaption des berühmten Kinderromans von Crockett Johnson aus dem Jahr 1955.
