An einem regnerischen Abend in Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt stirbt eine Frau bei einem Motorradunfall – zurück bleibt ihr kleiner Sohn, der das Unglück ohne einen Kratzer überlebt. Die Leiche der Verstorbenen soll ihr Stiefbruder Thien an ihren Heimatort zurückbringen. Mit dem fünfjährigen Dao macht sich Thien auf den Weg zu seinen Wurzeln und auf die Suche nach seinem vor einigen Jahren verschwundenen älteren Bruder. Es ist für Thien eine seltsame Reise zwischen Trauer und Neubeginn. Bei der Totenfeier sieht er sich mit Fragen des Glaubens konfrontiert, die er zuvor abgewehrt hat. Auch kommen verschüttet geglaubte Erinnerungen wieder an die Oberfläche. Und letztlich erwachen in ihm neue Wünsche an das Leben.
