Im September 2017 deutscher Schriftsteller und Regisseur Daniel Raboldt begleitet eine Gruppe von deutschen und polnischen Wissenschaftlern und Studenten in den Wäldern von Masuren, Polen. Die expedition hat auf der Suche nach den Spuren der sogenannten "verlorenen Dörfer", Links von der Masurians um 1945 am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Heute sind nur noch einige der alten Friedhöfen gefunden werden kann, tief im Wald, der herrlichen Masurischen Landschaft. Der Dokumentarfilm "zurück In der Geschichte - Die verlorenen Dörfer der Masuren" zeigt die Studenten bei Ihrer Arbeit in historischen Archiven und in den Wald. Wie schlüssig lässt sich diese Art der historischen Forschung sein? Wie viel können wir wirklich lernen, indem man durch alte Dateien oder anderen Quellen? Und was lernen wir aus dem verschwinden der Masurians? Wir stehen vor ähnlichen Problemen heute? Der film taucht tief ein in Themen wie dem Aufstieg des Nationalismus und der Identität, und zeigt das tragische Ende einer Bevölkerung wurde gebeten, eine einfache Frage im frühen 20. Jahrhundert: Bleiben oder gehen?
