Kurt Hoffmanns Verfilmung des gleichnamigen Romans von Eric Malpass schildert das zunächst sehr beschauliche Leben der Großfamilie Pentecost auf dem Lande. Der Familienalltag zwischen Mutter May, Vater Jocelyn, Tante Marygold, dem eigenwilligen Großvater und dem Nesthäkchen Gaylord verläuft mit mal mehr, mal weniger großen Schwierigkeiten, als Gaylord aus heiterem Himmel in echte Gefahr gerät. Der zurückgebliebene Nachbarsjunge Willy beschuldigt ihn, ihm einen Briefbeschwerer gestohlen zu haben, und trachtet Gaylord schließlich sogar nach dem Leben.
