Die Geschichte eines champion-Eskimo schlittenhund namens Kavik, wer überlebt einen Flugzeugabsturz in der wildnis von Alaska und wird gefunden und versorgt von einer Jungen namens Andy Evans, der bringt Kavik zurück in seine kleine Heimatstadt. Aber der Hund der Besitzer, George Hunter, nimmt Kavik zurück zu seinem Haus in Colorado, wo der Hund entkommt und begibt sich auf eine 2.000-Meilen-Odyssee auf der Suche nach Andy.
