Japan im frühen 17. Jahrhundert. Der alte Kaiser ist verstorben und einer seiner Söhne soll die Nachfolge antreten. Zugleich sendet der Palast Boten aus, Eunuchen, um nach Anwärterinnen zu suchen, welche dann die neuen Frauen des Kaisers werden sollen. Dabei werden diese dann in verschiedene Ränge eingeteilt, der höchste und angesehenste ist der der Seihi, welche als einzige den Kronprinzen gebären kann. Als die junge Ginga vom schönen Leben im Palast hört, macht sie es sich zum Ziel eben diese Seihi zu werden. Doch währenddessen rumort es sowohl im Palast, als auch unter der Bevölkerung. Neid und Hass machen sich breit und eine Rebellion scheint nicht mehr verhindert werden zu können. Kann Ginga ihr Ziel erreichen, um als neue Frau des Kaisers doch noch was zu unternehmen?
