Der Hawleys werden unterhaltsam auf Ihre palastartigen Hausboot vor Anker auf der Themse. Unter den Gästen sind Arsene Leblanc und Gabrielle, seine Frau. Leblanc tarnt sich als ein Künstler, ist aber in Wirklichkeit ein gewagtes secret-agent für eine ausländische Regierung. Leutnant Kühn, der Royal Navy, macht Ihre Bekanntschaft und vermittelt pose für sein Porträt auf den morgigen Tag. Leblanc und seine Frau besuchen Gewagte apartments auf den folgenden Tag und das portrait ist gestartet. Ein Bote unterbricht Sie und während Gewagte Abwesenheit, Leblanc sucht die Sekretärin und entdeckt die Pläne der mine field. Er hastig ergreift den Pinsel, lockert die Vorhänge über Gabrielles Schultern, und skizziert eine Kopie der Pläne auf dem Rücken in sepia. Gewagte beendet sein Geschäft mit der Gesandten und auf seine Rückkehr auf den Platz zufällig entdeckt die Handlung. Leblanc deckt ihn mit seinem revolver, und mit Hilfe seiner Frau, bindet der Leutnant sicher auf einem Stuhl und den paar fliehen. Gewagte Hund sorgen bei den Knoten ...
