Shortly before WW1,in a small village,Stein and the schoolteacher become lovers. The school mistress has noticed how clever Pierre's sister is and she urges the family to help their daughter to continue her studies ,which was not obvious at a time they needed help on the farms.The twentieth century had just begun and most of the "bauern" did not believe in education.Besides,Jules Ferry's schools were Godless schools and most of the people thought they were nothing but heathen plätze.The war breaks out ,and the young mean are leaving their country,all full of joy and enthusiasm.
