Diese Konzert vom 8. Juli 1991, das nur wenige Monate vor Miles Davis Tod im Herbst des gleichen Jahres stattfand, war das letzte von zahlreichen Gastspielen, die der amerikanische Jazz-Virtuose beim Montreux Jazz Festival gab. Obwohl Davis eigentlich die Meinung vertrat, man solle niemals zurückschauen, ließ er sich von Quincy Jones und Claude Nobs überreden, an einer Hommage für seinen großartigen Freund Gil Evans teilzunehmen, der 1988 verstorben war. Dieses wahrhaft einzigartige Konzert war nicht nur ein historischer Moment sondern auch ein musikalischer Triumph, der zum Glück für die Nachwelt festgehalten wurde. Miles Davis war eine Lichtgestalt der Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts, dieses Konzert ist ebenso eine Hommage an ihn wie auch an den verstorbenen Gil Evans.
