Yancey soll anstelle seines Onkels, der verletzt ist, in die Stadt reisen, um dort mit Tierfellen zu handeln. Unterwegs schließt sich ihm Rosalie an, die vor ihrer eigenen Familie geflüchtet ist. In der Stadt angekommen hat der schüchterne junge Mann Mühe, sich in der zivilisierten Gesellschaft zurechtzufinden. Der örtliche Sheriff, der Rosalie einen Job in einem Tanzlokal anbietet, entpuppt sich schon bald als intrigierender Schuft.
