Nach einem grandiosen Flop verkündet die alternde Schauspielerin Karen Stone das Ende ihrer Karriere und reist mit ihrem Gatten Tom nach Europa. Als Tom in Italien stirbt, beschließt Karen, vorerst in Rom zu bleiben. Sie lernt eine Contessa kennen, die sie mit jungen Männern bekannt macht. Karen ahnt zunächst nicht, dass sich die Contessa darauf spezialisiert hat, Amerikaner auszunehmen und die Männer als Gigolos für sie arbeiten. Die Lage spitzt sich zu, als Karen sich auf eine Affäre mit dem jungen Paolo einlässt.
