Nach seiner Flucht nach Amerika im Jahr 1787 Nicolas Phillibert will heiraten, eine reiche amerikanische Erbin. In seiner Heimat Frankreich ist er auch noch verheiratet aber die hübsche Charlotte. Um die Scheidung, er muss zurück, also zu Frankreich. In den Wirren der französischen revolution bald kommt er zwischen Royalisten und Republikanern. Nach zahlreichen kühnen Abenteuern findet er sein Leben-frohe Frau, die als Braut der beste Schwert Kämpfer der Bourbonen.
