Deniz Gezmiş und seine Freunde, Hüseyin Inan und Yusuf Aslan, waren Mitglieder der 68er-Bewegung in der Türkei. Gezmiş war Gründer und Führer der Studentenbewegung und der Untergrundorganisation Volksbefreiungsarmee der Türkei. Er leitete die Universitätsbesetzung im Juni 1968 und beteiligte sich an den Protesten gegen die 6. US-Flotte, die zu der Zeit in Istanbul vor Anker lag. 1971 wurde Gezmiş und seinen Freunden der Prozess gemacht. Die Helden der Linken der Türkei wurden im Oktober 1971 zum Tode verurteilt. Die Todesstrafen von Gezmiş, Aslan und İnan wurde am 6. Mai 1972 im geschlossenen Zentralgefängnis von Ankara durch Erhängen vollstreckt.
