Amerikanischen Fotografen Charles Gatewood begann in den 1960er Jahren als ein junger Mann mit träumen von der Welt zu zeigen, die Radikale kulturelle Entwicklungen, es gebe in seinem Land. Er traf viele der ikonischen Anstifter des Wandels und dokumentiert Sie für die Nachwelt. Als die Jahrzehnte vergingen, Gatewood driftete mehr und mehr in einen persönlichen Ausdruck der sexuellen Subkulturen, sowohl in Amerika als auch im Ausland. Seine ausdrucksstarken Fotos von Pionieren innerhalb des tattooing - und piercing-Szenen half ebnen den Weg für die Bewegung, wurde als "Modern Primitive". Es ist ein klassisches Beispiel dafür, wenn Kunst, und in diesem Beispiel speziell die Fotografie verschmilzt mit dem Allgemeinen Umfeld und nimmt neue Formen an, die unmöglich zu stoppen. Oder, wie das in San Francisco lebende Fotograf selbst beschreibt es: "wenn die Zahnpasta ist aus der tube, Sie können nicht zurück".
