Othello (Placido Domingo) ist stolzer Flottenführer und liebevoller Ehemann seiner schönen Frau Desdemona (Katia Ricciarelli). Doch sein Untergang kommt fast über Nacht, als sein verräterischer Fähnrich Iago (Justino Diaz) ihn dazu verführt, Desdemonas Treue anzuzweifeln. Zum Beweis ihrer angeblichen Indiskretion schmuggelt Iago ein besticktes Taschentuch, ein Geschenk von Othello an Desdemona, in das Haus des jungen Cassio (Urbano Barberini). Von Wut verzehrt über dieses kleine Stück Stoff, das den Betrug seiner Frau beweist, würgt Othello seine unschuldige Braut zu Tode.
