1968, § 175, die homosexuelles Verhalten bestrafen können, wurde das Gesetz abgeschafft, in der deutschen Demokratischen Republik. Auf den ersten Homosexualität wurde als ein vernachlässigbares Problem im 'real existierenden Sozialismus'. Die Familie bildete den Mittelpunkt der sozialen Gesellschaft. »Out in Ost-Berlin« erzählt die verschiedenen, beeindruckend-zu-absurd persönliche Geschichten von schwulen und Lesben während der sozialistischen DDR bis zum fall der Berliner Mauer. Ihre Erfahrungen auf dem Weg zu einer selbst-bewussten, geoutet sexuelle Identität teilen sich eine spezifische Perspektive: Sie werden begleitet von den wachsamen Augen des Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit ("Stasi"). Auch Ihre Aktionen in der Bett-Zimmer aufgenommen wurden, in unzählige persönliche Dateien. Auf der Grundlage der homosexuellen Perspektive, die Filmemacher Jochen Hick und Andreas Strohfeldt Aufklärung das politische Bild der DDR, in der die Bürger überwacht, ausgespäht und auf deren Bewegungen sind zurückhaltend.
