Geboren Peter Schmidt in New York City, Pete Smith bekam einen job nach dem Studium business college mit Dem Player magazine und später mit dem Billboard-Magazin. Das führte zu seiner Anstellung als Publizist für Famous players-Lasky und Artcraft Pictures, und später wurde er ernannt, publicity director bei Paramount Pictures.
