In einem spektakulären wissenschaftlichen Großprojekt versuchen die japanischen Meeresbiologen, kaum bekannte Tiefsee-Haie vor die Kameras zu bekommen. Bei ihren Tauchfahrten mit modernsten Deap Sea Rovern begegnen die Wissenschaftler dem urtümlichen Kragenhai, der mit keinem modernen Hai näher verwandt ist und dessen Wurzeln wohl 380 Millionen Jahre in die Erdgeschichte zurückreichen. Die Entdeckung des Riesenmaulhaies (1976), auch als Megamouth bekannt, gilt nach der Entdeckung des Quastenflossers als zweite zoologische Sensation des 20. Jahrhunderts.
