Die Musik-Dokumentation Spielen Sie Ihre Eigene Sache liefert eine umfassende Geschichte des europäischen jazz. Es erforscht die Ursprünge des US-beeinflussten jazz-clubs nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, die ersten Schritte unabhängig von den amerikanischen jazz und den verschiedenen Richtungswechseln, die immer wieder vorgekommen in der Suche nach der "eigenen Stimme", die europäischen jazz-Musiker, die geholfen haben, zu bilden. Mit der Beherrschung von Chris Barber, Jan Garbarek, Juliette Greco, Stefano Bollani und Till Bronner, um nur einige zu nennen, bietet der film eine fülle von Stilen des jazz. Für seinen Dritten Dokumentarfilm über jazz, Filmemacher Julian Benedikt gereist, um eine Vielzahl von europäischen Ländern auf der Suche nach einer allumfassenden Dokumentation der europäischen jazz-Musik. Seine Erzählweise ist nicht allzu anspruchsvoll, noch hat er einfach reproduzieren die bekannten Klischees, sondern der Film greift sein Publikum mit sehr persönlichen Eindrücken des europäischen jazz der Gegenwart und der Vergangenheit.
