Der prächtige Hund Buck wird auf Judge Millers Ranch geboren und verlebt hier in der luxuriösen Wärme Kaliforniens die ersten fünf Jahre seines Lebens als verwöhnter Haushund. Doch dann braut sich das Unheil zusammen. Buck gerät in die Schlinge eines Hundefängers und wird für eine Spielschuld verkauft. Man transportiert ihn an die kanadische Grenze, wo ihn der Postkurier Perrault kauft und zum Schlittenhund trainiert. Buck lernt sehr schnell die Gesetze dieser für ihn neuen und kalten Welt, in der nur der Stärkste überlebt. Aber eines Tages ändert sich für Buck alles schlagartig, als er auf John Thornton trifft, der ihm in letzter Sekunde das Leben rettet...
