Alexander Garcia hält sich für den größten Pechvogel überhaupt. Als seine Mutter Val, eine Reiseschriftstellerin, eine seltene Gelegenheit nutzt, um die entfremdete Familie wieder näher zusammenzubringen, ahnt Alexander bereits, dass das nicht gut laufen wird. Sie organisiert eine Reise nach Mexiko-Stadt, in der Hoffnung, gemeinsame Erlebnisse könnten die Bindung stärken. Alexander ahnt bereits, dass das Vorhaben scheitern wird. Dennoch treten sie die Reise an: Vater Frank, Schwester Mia, sowie die Großeltern Lidia und Gil begleiten ihn. Kaum angekommen, häufen sich die Missgeschicke, und schließlich scheint eine verfluchte, uralte Statue der Auslöser zu sein. Um das Unheil zu stoppen, bleibt der Familie nichts anderes übrig, als die Statue an ihren ursprünglichen Platz zurückzubringen.
