Bereits früh revoltierte Otto Modersohn (1865-1943) als Student der Kunstakademie gegen die Lehren seiner Professoren in Düsseldorf und stellte seine eigene Naturphilosophie in den Mittelpunkt seines Schaffens. Damit erklärte er sich selbst zum Landschaftsmaler. Modersohn entwickelte sich zu einem unabhängigen Einzelgänger, der seine künstlerischen Ziele mit den Begriffen Einfachheit, Intimität und Innerlichkeit definierte und seine kreative Kraft aus der geistigen Versenkung in die Natur schöpfte. Der Dokumentarfilm „So weit und groß - Die Natur des Otto Modersohn" von Carlo Modersohn erzählt mit Hilfe von Archivmaterial wie Briefen, Tagebucheinträgen und persönlichen Notizen die bewegende Lebensgeschichte des einflussreichen Malers nach, der sich nicht von seinem eigenen Weg abbringen ließ.
