Als SpongeBob in der Stadtbibliothek seinen Stammbaum zurückverfolgt, findet er heraus, dass er mit dem großen Westernhelden SpongeBuck verwandt ist. Die Geschichte seines Vorfahren beginnt in der Stadt Dead Eye Gulch, die Bikini Gulch hieß, bevor der böse Dead Eye Plankton sie überfiel und alles übernahm. Alles bis auf Pappy Krabs' Krosse Kantine, in der Hopalong Thaddäus hinter der Theke steht und wo zwielichtige Gäste wie Pecos Patrick verkehren. Seit Dead Eye sein großes hässliches Auge auf die Krosse Kantine geworfen hat, scheint auch dieses letzte Refugium der Freiheit dem Untergang geweiht zu sein. Noch gibt es freilich Hoffnung: Denn der etwas unbedarfte SpongeBuck trifft in der Stadt ein und gibt fröhlich bekannt, dass er die Stelle des Chilikochs antreten möchte, die in der Zeitung ausgeschrieben war. Die Bewohner warten so verzweifelt auf jemanden, der sich gegen Dead Eye auflehnt, dass sie SpongeBuck kurzerhand zum Sheriff ernennen.
