"Steppenlauf" ist ein Film über Menschen, die für ihren Traum kämpfen, und über ein für uns immer noch fernes Land im Umbruch. Die mongolischen Skilangläufer trainieren unter schwierigsten Bedingungen: Es fehlen geeignete Trainingsmöglichkeiten, vom Weltskiverband FIS anerkannte Wettkampfstrecken und vieles mehr. Trotz aller Schwierigkeiten und Hindernisse trainieren die jungen Sportler mit hoher Motivation, Freude und großem Kampfgeist. Ihr Traum: sich für die Teilnahme an den Olympischen Spielen zu qualifizieren.
